From a $215 Mold to 3 Years of Production: Low Volume Injection Molding in India
How Manufyn helped a global manufacturing customer move a low-volume injection molded component from a high-investment tooling model to a rapid, cost-effective production solution in India.
Rapid tooling • Plastic injection molding • Low volume production • Tool development • Quality oversight • Export from India
When 3,000 Parts a Year Do Not Justify Expensive Tooling
The customer was purchasing molded components from manufacturing suppliers in China and Taiwan and was evaluating India as an additional production source.
The annual requirement for this component was approximately 3,000 pieces per year.
The immediate requirement was to test the component’s fit and function without committing to a large conventional production mold.
There was another challenge: the customer did not initially know the total lifetime quantity that would eventually be manufactured from the tooling.
Rapid Injection Molding Tooling Instead of Over-Engineering the Project
Rather than automatically recommending a conventional production mold, Manufyn evaluated the project around the customer’s actual annual volume, validation requirement and uncertainty around future demand.
The selected route was a vertical injection mold using a soft tooling approach.
The objective was straightforward: reduce initial tooling risk while getting production-representative molded parts into the customer’s hands quickly.
A compact tooling solution designed around the actual low-volume production requirement rather than an unnecessarily expensive tooling architecture.
The tool was developed using a rapid prototyping approach to shorten the path from requirement to physical sample.
Following sample approval, the component moved into regular production and export supply.
Injection Molding for Engineering Plastic Components
The application involved a circular molded engineering plastic component.
The specified material was Nylon-66 with 30% glass reinforcement.
For confidentiality, Manufyn does not publish the customer’s engineering drawing, part number or actual production photographs on this case study.
The visual representation on this page is intentionally generic and is designed to communicate the manufacturing process without revealing customer intellectual property.

From Injection Molding RFQ to Production
Manufyn coordinated the project through a structured manufacturing workflow designed to minimize unnecessary delay between tooling, sampling, customer approval and production.
RFQ Review
Review part geometry, material, annual volume and manufacturing requirements.
Tooling Strategy
Evaluate rapid tooling, soft tooling or conventional injection mold options.
Tool Development
Coordinate rapid mold development and initial production.
Sample Approval
Submit samples to the customer for fit and function validation.
Production
Move into regular production and international shipment.
The $215 Mold Is Still Producing After 3 Years
The original requirement was focused on fit and function validation and low-volume production.
The customer had not initially defined the total number of parts expected over the life of the project.
The soft tooling approach therefore reduced the customer’s initial tooling exposure while allowing production to begin.
What happened next exceeded the original validation requirement.
The same mold has continued to support production for approximately three years.
This does not mean every soft mold will deliver the same service life. Tool life depends on mold construction, material, geometry, process parameters, cycle count, maintenance and required production conditions.
From China and Taiwan Supply to India Production
The broader significance of this project goes beyond the cost of one mold.
The customer was previously obtaining molded components from suppliers in China and Taiwan and has now started shifting production to India.
For international procurement teams, this type of manufacturing transition requires much more than finding an injection molding machine.
A successful supplier transition requires coordination across tooling, material, quality, process control, sampling, production, packaging, documentation and international logistics.
This is where Manufyn’s role as an India Purchasing Office and manufacturing procurement partner becomes relevant.
More Than an Injection Molding Supplier Search
International buyers need more than a factory contact. They need engineering evaluation, supplier development, quality oversight, production follow-up and export coordination.

When Does Rapid or Soft Tooling Make Sense?
Rapid injection molding tooling is not automatically the right answer for every project. The tooling strategy should be matched to the part, volume, material, expected tool life and commercial objective.
Rapid / Soft Tooling Can Be Relevant When:
- Annual production volume is relatively low.
- Future demand is uncertain.
- Fit and function need to be validated.
- Initial tooling investment needs to remain low.
- Bridge production is required.
- A production transfer is being evaluated.
- Fast molded samples are required.
- The customer wants to test an Indian manufacturing source.
Conventional Production Tooling May Be Better When:
- Production volume is high.
- Long tool life is a primary requirement.
- Complex mold mechanisms are required.
- High cycle counts are expected.
- Multiple cavities are commercially justified.
- The design is already frozen and production demand is established.
Manufyn can help buyers evaluate the tooling route rather than automatically applying the same solution to every injection molding project.

Injection Molding in India: Questions from Global Buyers
Can Manufyn support low volume injection molding in India?
Yes. Manufyn can evaluate rapid tooling, soft tooling, prototype molds and conventional injection molding based on the part geometry, material, annual volume and expected production requirements.
Can U.S. companies buy injection molded parts from India?
Manufyn supports international manufacturing programs where components are produced in India and prepared for international shipment. Commercial terms, logistics, applicable duties and import requirements should be evaluated for each product and destination.
Can Manufyn help move injection molding production from China to India?
Yes. Manufyn can support supplier identification, tooling evaluation, sample development, supplier coordination, quality oversight and production transition for programs being evaluated for India.
Is soft tooling suitable for production?
It can be suitable for certain low-volume and bridge production applications. Tool life depends on the mold construction, material, part geometry, molding process, production volume and maintenance requirements.
What information does Manufyn need for an injection molding RFQ?
Ideally, provide the part drawing or 3D model, material, annual volume, expected order quantity, tolerances, surface requirements, quality standards and target delivery timeline. A manufacturing RFQ process can help structure the information.
