8-Piece CNC Machining Order for a Global Robotics Manufacturer
The Challenge: Manufacturing Just 8 Pieces Economically
A global robotics manufacturing company required a small batch of machined spacers for its engineering and manufacturing requirements.
The requirement was for only 8 pieces. While the geometry of the component is relatively simple, very low-volume orders can create a disproportionate manufacturing and procurement burden.
Programming, machine setup, raw material preparation, inspection, packaging and international logistics all have to be managed even when the production quantity is extremely small.
The objective was therefore not simply to find a machine shop. The objective was to create an efficient manufacturing route for a small quantity while keeping the final part cost commercially attractive.
Why This Matters in Robotics Manufacturing
Robotics companies frequently require small quantities during prototype development, engineering validation, assembly trials and early product development.
A procurement model designed only for high-volume production can make these small orders unnecessarily expensive.
Manufyn’s India manufacturing network allows global engineering companies to access suitable manufacturing capabilities even when the initial requirement is only a handful of components.
AD-102 Manufacturing Requirements
The supplied engineering drawing defines AD-102 as a spacer manufactured from Aluminium 1060, with the principal cylindrical dimensions and general manufacturing requirements shown below.
| Parameter | Requirement | Manufacturing Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Part Number | AD-102 | Part identification and production traceability |
| Part Name | Spacer | Functional identification within the assembly |
| Material | Aluminium 1060 | Lightweight aluminium component |
| Overall Length | 45 mm | Controls axial part dimension |
| Outside Diameter | Ø15 mm | Defines the external cylindrical envelope |
| Internal Bore | Ø6.2 mm | Defines the central opening |
| General Tolerance | ISO 7168 | Provides the general dimensional tolerance basis |
| Surface Finish | 12.5 | Defines the indicated surface finish requirement |
From Engineering Drawing to Finished Components
For a quantity of only eight pieces, manufacturing efficiency depends heavily on setup control, process selection and avoiding unnecessary operations.
Drawing Review
Review the part geometry, material, principal dimensions, tolerance basis, surface finish and quantity before selecting the manufacturing route.
Manufacturing Route
The cylindrical geometry lends itself to an efficient CNC turning approach, subject to supplier process validation and final drawing interpretation.
Dimensional Control
Finished parts are checked against the supplied drawing requirements before packaging and shipment.
Fast International Shipping
After manufacturing and quality checks, the eight pieces were prepared for international shipment using a fast shipping service.
Why a Simple Part Still Requires Manufacturing Discipline
AD-102 is a relatively simple cylindrical component. However, simple geometry does not eliminate the need for controlled manufacturing.
With only eight pieces required, there is very little opportunity to absorb scrap, rework or an inefficient setup. The manufacturing route therefore needs to balance cycle time, material utilisation, workholding, tool selection and inspection.
Cylindrical Geometry
The combination of a Ø15 mm external cylindrical surface, Ø6.2 mm central bore and 45 mm overall length creates a predominantly rotational geometry.
Material Consideration
Aluminium 1060 is the material identified on the supplied drawing. For low-volume machining, material availability and efficient stock preparation are important contributors to overall project economics.
Low Quantity Economics
When the order quantity is only eight pieces, setup and handling activities can represent a significant part of the total manufacturing effort. Efficient procurement and supplier coordination therefore become as important as the machining process itself.
A Small Quantity. A Production-Ready Procurement Workflow.
Manufyn supported the global robotics manufacturer with an economical eight-piece manufacturing requirement, coordinating the manufacturing route, quality control and fast international shipping.
The result demonstrates how an India-based procurement partner can support robotics companies even when the requirement is too small for conventional production purchasing models.
