Inside a Large CNC Machine Shop in Pune
What we look for when physically evaluating a CNC machining supplier in India for international manufacturing customers.
At Manufyn, we believe that selecting a CNC machining supplier in India requires more than comparing quotations, browsing supplier directories or matching RFQs through an algorithm.
On 06 October 2026, we visited a large machine shop in Pune to evaluate its manufacturing infrastructure, CNC machining capability, quality systems, inspection capabilities and overall suitability for international manufacturing programs.
This was another practical supplier visit in our ongoing effort to understand India’s manufacturing ecosystem directly from the factory floor.
Why Physical Factory Visits Matter
India has a large and highly diverse CNC manufacturing ecosystem. Pune alone has a significant concentration of precision engineering, automotive, industrial machinery, CNC machining and VMC machining companies.
But a supplier appearing in an online directory does not automatically mean that the supplier is suitable for a particular engineering drawing, tolerance, material, quantity or quality requirement.
A physical factory visit allows us to understand what cannot be established reliably from a supplier profile.
- What machines are actually available?
- What processes are performed internally?
- What is the actual production capacity?
- How is quality controlled?
- What inspection equipment is available?
- How are secondary processes managed?
- How does the supplier handle quality problems?
- Can the supplier support international customers?
A Large CNC Manufacturing Facility in Pune
The facility visited during this supplier evaluation operates from approximately 22,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space and has a workforce of more than 60 people.
The operation also works across three shifts, providing a manufacturing environment capable of supporting production requirements beyond a conventional single-shift machine shop.
For an international buyer, capacity is important. However, capacity must always be evaluated together with process capability, quality infrastructure and production control.
4 Axis VMC Machining Capability
One of the key manufacturing capabilities observed during the visit was 4 axis VMC machining.
4 axis CNC machining can provide additional flexibility for components requiring machining from multiple orientations, rotary indexing and complex feature arrangements.
For buyers looking for a 4 axis CNC machining supplier in India, the important question is not simply whether a machine exists on the shop floor.
We also evaluate the combination of machine capability, programming, tooling, workholding, operator capability and inspection.
A machine shop should not be evaluated as a collection of machines. It should be evaluated as a complete manufacturing system.
Production Quantities and CNC Manufacturing Strategy
The requirements discussed during the visit included production quantities in the region of 500 to 1,000 pieces.
CNC machining economics change significantly as production volume increases. Setup time, tooling, fixtures, tool life, inspection frequency, material planning and batch control all become important.
This is why Manufyn evaluates the complete manufacturing requirement rather than simply comparing unit prices.
Quality Control Is More Than Final Inspection
A dedicated quality team was another important observation from the factory visit. The notes from the visit indicated approximately seven quality personnel.
For precision CNC machining, quality needs to be built into the manufacturing process rather than relying only on final inspection.
- Incoming material inspection
- First-off inspection
- In-process inspection
- Final inspection
- Dimensional verification
- Non-conformance management
- Root cause analysis
- Corrective action
CMM Inspection and Surface Roughness Measurement
The facility also has CMM inspection capability and surface roughness measurement.
These capabilities are important when manufacturing components with complex geometry, tight tolerances, positional requirements, datum relationships and controlled surface finishes.
Manufyn also supports international customers with CMM inspection services in India and quality inspection services .
PPAP and 8D Capability
The supplier’s capability also includes PPAP and 8D corrective action.
This is particularly relevant for automotive and other industries where production approval, process control and documented corrective action are important.
The factory visit notes indicated an approximate five-day 8D response expectation.
For international buyers, response time during a quality problem can be just as important as the initial manufacturing capability.
Heat Treatment, Anodising and Powder Coating
CNC machining is only one stage of the manufacturing supply chain.
The supplier ecosystem observed during the visit also includes outsourced heat treatment, anodising and powder coating.
Outsourcing a secondary process is not inherently a weakness. What matters is whether the supplier can properly control the external process.
- Approved secondary-process supplier
- Material and batch traceability
- Process certificates
- Defined coating requirements
- Inspection after secondary processing
- Control of critical dimensions
The visit notes also highlighted coating requirements involving approximately 20 micron and 10 micron critical areas, reinforcing why secondary-process specifications must be clearly controlled.
The Manufyn Difference: We Do Not Use Algorithmic Supplier Matching
This is one of the most important differences between Manufyn and an online supplier marketplace.
A buyer can use an online platform and receive a list of manufacturing suppliers based on an algorithm, database search or automated RFQ matching.
That is not how we build the Manufyn supplier network.
Manufyn does not simply connect customers with algorithmically matched suppliers. Our suppliers are physically evaluated before we assign them business.
We visit factories.
We evaluate manufacturing capabilities.
We assess quality infrastructure.
We understand production capacity.
We identify strengths and limitations.
Only after understanding the supplier can we determine which type of RFQ is appropriate for that supplier.
Supplier Discovery Is Not Supplier Development
Finding a CNC machine shop in India is relatively easy.
Finding the right CNC machining supplier for a specific drawing, tolerance, material, quantity, industry and delivery requirement is much more difficult.
This is why Manufyn focuses on supplier selection and supplier development rather than simply maintaining a large supplier database.
What International Buyers Should Look For in an Indian Machine Shop
If you are evaluating a CNC machining supplier in India, do not stop at machine capacity.
- What CNC machines are actually available?
- Does the supplier have 3 axis, 4 axis or 5 axis capability?
- Can it manufacture the required material?
- Can it support the required monthly volume?
- Is CMM inspection available?
- Can it support PPAP?
- Can it provide 8D corrective action?
- How are heat treatment and coatings controlled?
- How quickly does the supplier respond to quality issues?
- Has anyone physically evaluated the factory?
Why Pune Is Important for CNC Machining Procurement
Pune has a strong manufacturing ecosystem covering precision machining, CNC turning, VMC machining, automotive components, industrial machinery, tooling, robotics and engineering components.
This makes Pune an important manufacturing region for companies looking to develop Indian suppliers.
But a large supplier ecosystem also creates another problem: choice.
The challenge is not finding a supplier.
The challenge is finding the right supplier.
From RFQ to Global Delivery
Manufyn can support international customers through the broader procurement process.
Our India Purchasing Office model can provide local supplier coordination, procurement support and manufacturing follow-up.
We can also support RFQ management , supplier evaluation, quality coordination and production follow-up.
We Don’t Just Find Suppliers. We Know Them.
Manufyn’s supplier network is built through physical factory visits, technical evaluation and supplier qualification.
Before assigning business, we want to understand the manufacturing company behind the quotation.
