From Engineering Drawing to Delivered CNC Turned Parts

A USA-based customer required an urgent batch of stainless steel threaded rods for a hold-down clamp application. The requirement demanded material confirmation, CNC turning, external threading, finishing, inspection and extremely fast delivery.

Manufyn developed the component in Stainless Steel 304 (SS304) after customer confirmation and coordinated the manufacturing and delivery process from India.

Customer Requirement

The engineering drawing defined an approximately 8-inch threaded component with a 1/2-13 UNC 2A external thread, controlled diameters, chamfers and deburring requirements.

The challenge was to manufacture a small quantity rapidly while maintaining the dimensional and functional requirements of the engineering drawing.

Manufacturing objective: Manufacture, inspect and dispatch the required SS304 components within an extremely compressed customer timeline without compromising process control.

TECHNICAL MANUFACTURING PROCESS

How the SS304 Threaded Rod Was Manufactured

The manufacturing route was planned around the component geometry, stainless steel material, thread specification, quantity and accelerated delivery requirement.

01

Engineering Drawing Review

The customer drawing was reviewed before production to understand the overall length, outside diameter, thread specification, chamfers, tolerances, surface requirements and edge-breaking requirements.

Drawing review allows the manufacturing route to be established before raw material is loaded into the machine and helps identify potential production constraints at an early stage.

02

Material Confirmation — SS304

After customer confirmation, the component was developed in Stainless Steel 304.

Stainless steel machining requires appropriate control of cutting conditions, tool condition, heat generation and workholding because these factors can influence dimensional stability, surface finish and tool life.

03

Raw Material Preparation

Stainless steel stock was prepared with appropriate machining allowance for facing, turning, threading and finishing operations.

For an urgent low-volume requirement, raw material availability is an important part of the overall lead-time calculation.

04

CNC Turning Setup

The material was secured in the CNC turning setup with attention to workholding stability, concentricity and repeatability.

Because the component has a relatively long geometry compared with its diameter, machining stability is important. Workholding and cutting conditions must be selected to minimise vibration, deflection and dimensional variation.

05

Facing and Reference Establishment

The raw stock was faced to establish a clean machining reference. This reference was then used to control the finished component length.

A consistent datum strategy improves part-to-part repeatability when manufacturing multiple components from the same drawing.

06

Outside Diameter Turning

CNC turning was used to produce the required cylindrical geometry and control the outside diameter of the threaded rod.

Tool condition, cutting parameters, material behaviour, workholding rigidity and thermal effects can all influence the final dimensional result.

07

External Threading — 1/2-13 UNC 2A

1/2-13 UNC 2A

Functional External Thread

The external thread was one of the critical functional features of the component.

CNC thread machining synchronises spindle rotation and tool movement to produce the required thread pitch and geometry.

Thread quality depends on correct programming, tooling, machine rigidity, cutting conditions, tool condition and material behaviour.

The objective was not simply to create a visibly threaded surface. The finished thread needed to function correctly with the customer’s mating component and meet the specified thread class.

08

Chamfering

Chamfering was performed as required by the engineering drawing to create controlled transitions between adjoining surfaces and eliminate sharp edges.

09

Deburring and Edge Breaking

The finished components were deburred and sharp edges were broken as required.

Deburring around threaded features is particularly important because residual burrs can interfere with assembly, handling and thread engagement.

10

Dimensional and Thread Inspection

Finished components were checked against the customer drawing before dispatch.

Inspection focused on the critical characteristics of the turned component including dimensions, threaded features, chamfers, finished edges and overall visual condition.

Quality verification is an important part of Manufyn’s manufacturing coordination process for international buyers.

11

Packing and International Shipment

After inspection, the components were packed and prepared for international shipment to the USA.

For urgent projects, machining time is only one component of the total delivery timeline. Production coordination, quality inspection, packing, dispatch and international logistics must all be aligned with the customer’s required delivery date.

QUALITY CONTROL

Fast Manufacturing Without Losing Process Control

The objective was not simply to manufacture the parts quickly. The parts also needed to be ready for use when they reached the customer.

Drawing-Based Inspection

Finished components were evaluated against the engineering drawing and specified functional features.

Thread Control

The 1/2-13 UNC 2A external thread was treated as a functional manufacturing feature requiring appropriate process and inspection control.

Final Condition

Components were checked for machining condition, deburring, sharp edges and overall readiness before shipment.
