Types of Rapid Prototyping: SLA, SLS, FDM, CNC

There are eight main types of rapid prototyping used in engineering and product development: FDM, SLA, SLS, DMLS, MJF/PolyJet, CNC machining, sheet metal prototyping, and vacuum casting. Each type suits different combinations of material, tolerance, surface finish, and cost. Manufyn’s rapid prototyping service covers all eight types, with free DFM review and 24-hour quoting on every order.

Why Choosing the Right Type Matters

Selecting the wrong rapid prototyping method is one of the most expensive mistakes in product development. An FDM model cannot replicate the thermal or mechanical properties of a CNC aluminium part. A sheet metal prototype cannot be substituted by a 3D-printed ABS model if the goal is assembly validation. Before selecting a method, review what rapid prototyping is and how the process works understanding the purpose of your prototype drives the right technology choice.

For a balanced view of when rapid prototyping is the right choice versus traditional prototyping, see advantages and disadvantages of rapid prototyping. For cost implications of each method, see the rapid prototyping cost guide.

Type 1: FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling)

FDM extrudes thermoplastic filament through a heated nozzle, depositing it layer by layer. It is the lowest-cost and fastest 3D printing technology for concept models and fit-and-form checks. Not recommended for functional mechanical testing or tight-tolerance features.

Type 2: SLA (Stereolithography)

SLA cures liquid photopolymer resin with a UV laser, producing the finest surface detail of any 3D printing method. It is the standard technology forinvestment casting patterns — including jewelry and luxury goods — and for medical device housings and cosmetic samples. For a deep dive into 3D printing methods including SLA, see the 3D printing rapid prototyping guide.

Type 3: SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) and MJF

SLS fuses nylon powder with a laser, requiring no support material — enabling complex geometry with internal channels and undercuts. MJF uses inkjet agents with an infrared lamp, producing nylon parts faster with consistent properties. Both methods are widely used in automotive prototyping, consumer electronics and IoT devices, and industrial functional components.

Type 4: DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering)

DMLS sinters metal powder with a high-power laser, producing fully dense metal parts with complex geometry. It is used for aerospace brackets with topology-optimised structures, medical implant prototype geometry, and automotive performance components. When tight tolerance is required after DMLS printing, CNC post-machining is applied see the CNC rapid prototyping guide for when this hybrid approach is most effective.

Type 5: MJF and PolyJet

PolyJet deposits photopolymer droplets enabling multi-material prototypes — rigid and flexible materials in one print. Widely used for consumer electronics with TPE overmoulding and medical handheld devices. For detailed guidance on 3D printing technology selection, see the complete 3D printing guide.

Type 6: CNC Rapid Prototyping

CNC machining is the preferred method when end-use material properties matter, tolerances tighter than ±0.2mm are required, or the production part will be CNC machined. See the dedicated CNC rapid prototyping guide for a full comparison of CNC vs 3D printing, materials, tolerances, lead times, and cost. CNC is the standard approach for medical device prototypes, aerospace housings, and defence components. Also see Manufyn’s full CNC machining service at manufyn.com/commodities/cnc-machining/.

Type 7: Sheet Metal Rapid Prototyping

When the production part will be sheet metal, prototype it in sheet metal. No other method validates fit, assembly, hardware installation, and coating in the same way. See the full sheet metal rapid prototyping guide for process details, materials, tolerances, and when sheet metal beats 3D printing and CNC. Type 8: Vacuum Casting and Rapid Injection Moulding

Vacuum casting uses a silicone mould from an SLA master to produce 1–50 production-equivalent plastic parts. Rapid injection moulding with soft aluminium tooling extends this to 50–5,000 parts. For full details, see the casting and moulding rapid prototyping guide. This method is widely used inautomotive prototyping and consumer electronics pre-production.

Frequently Asked Questions Types of Rapid Prototyping

FDM is fastest for concept models (1–2 days). For metal prototypes, CNC machining is typically fastest (3–5 days express). Full lead time comparison is in the rapid prototyping process guide.

CNC machined prototypes from solid metal billet have the highest mechanical properties  identical to production parts. DMLS produces strong metal prototypes. For strongest 3D-printed plastic, SLS nylon is preferred. See the CNC rapid prototyping guide for material strength comparisons.

Yes. Manufyn’s fully in-house facility in Pune covers all 8 types through a single supplier and single quality system. See manufyn.com/services/sourcing-from-india/prototyping/ for the full capability list.

SLA cures liquid resin best for smooth surface detail, cosmetic reviews, and casting patterns. SLS sinters nylon powder best for functional parts with complex geometry. SLA requires support structures; SLS does not. See the 3D printing guide for a full comparison.

SLA (biocompatible resins), CNC (stainless steel 316L, titanium, PEEK), and DMLS (titanium for implant geometry) are standard. For full medical guidance, see rapid prototyping for medical devices.

Vacuum casting (urethane casting) — the silicone mould cost is amortised across the batch, producing parts that closely mimic injection moulding. See the casting and moulding guide for batch size and cost breakdowns.

Yes. A first iteration may be FDM for geometry check; a second may be SLA for cosmetic review; a third may be CNC for functional validation. Manufyn manages multi-iteration projects across technologies as a single project with one account manager.

For simple parts, 3D printing is lower cost at 1–5 pieces. For sheet metal assemblies, the cost is often comparable — and far more valuable because it validates the production design. See the sheet metal rapid prototyping guide for a detailed cost comparison.
