What is Overmolding?

Overmolding is an advanced plastic injection molding process in which one material is molded over another substrate to create a single integrated component. Unlike conventional molding, overmolding combines the strength of rigid engineering plastics with the flexibility of elastomers such as TPE, TPU, TPV or Silicone, resulting in products that offer superior grip, enhanced sealing, vibration damping and improved aesthetics.

The process begins by manufacturing a rigid base component using materials such as ABS, Polycarbonate, Nylon, Glass Filled Nylon or PEEK. This substrate is then transferred into a second mold cavity where a softer material is injected over selected areas, permanently bonding the two materials without adhesives or secondary assembly.
